Hermon Afowork

The Sustainable Development Goals Hub

Youth Participant

Hermon Afowork (she/her) is an Edmontonian in the third-year of her Political Science major and International Studies minor program at the University of Alberta. She currently serves as the VP External of the Political Science Undergraduate Association, which for the second time in the history of the university is led by an all-women of colour executive team. Moreover, she is an internal committee member of Women Empowering Women (WEW), a student-led group that works alongside the Nisa Homes Edmonton chapter by raising awareness on the issues surrounding immigrant and refugee women fleeing domestic violence, facing poverty and seeking asylum. Her dedication to gender equality and representation is what led her to co-found and co-host the podcast WEWchats, a show dedicated to having honest and raw conversations with female guests that aims to promote wellness, empowerment, and self-sufficiency. She also serves on the City of Edmonton’s Youth Council as a projects subcommittee member and is an advocate volunteer at the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights. The Sustainable Development Goals that she is most passionate about are SDG 5: Gender equality, SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities and SDG 3: Good Health and Well Being. She hopes to take on these challenges and work towards a more sustainable and equitable environment.
