Nikki Barraza is a recent alumnus at the University of Calgary, completing a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in International Relations and a minor in Psychology in 2020. During her time there, she successfully completed the Arts Co-op Program, with her first work term was as a Human Rights Intern at the Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations in Geneva. Her second work term was as a Co-op Engagement Coordinator with the University of Calgary Office of Sustainability. She is also involved as a Program Assistant with Shad Canada, a highly competitive STEAM-based program. Her passion for sustainability began in high school after seeing Severn Suzuki’s 1992 U.N. Earth Summit address in Rio, where she decided that she wanted to be an active player in a generation of sustainability change-makers. She believes that youth today are not only aware of the Earth’s current climate situation but also willing, if not determined, to take part in combating climate change through the process of achieving the SDGs. Her top 3 SDGs are SDG 9: Innovation and Infrastructure, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. She hopes to share her experiences and passion for human rights, the environment, and student development, to build a diverse, inclusive, and sustainability community.
