The Sustainable Development Goals Hub
Sydney Whiting is a high school student in Lethbridge, Alberta. Amidst an intense year of global, youth-led climate strikes; polarization of elected leaders; and stark controversy within Alberta; Sydney recognized the importance of advocating for environmental sustainability and stewardship. She co-organized the largest Lethbridge Climate Strike, and strongly believes that addressing SDG 13 [Climate Action] can have a ripple effect in supporting meaningful action for Life on Land (15), Life under Water (14), Sustainable Cities and Communities (11), Clean and Affordable Energy (7), and others.
Beyond this, she is a passionate leader, fundraiser, and activist, spearheading many other projects in her community. She was awarded the Leaders of Tomorrow Excellence Award through her work with Volunteer Lethbridge and VOCALiD; where she built a volunteer group and coordinated over 200 hours for the voice-recording platform that enables individuals who cannot speak the ability to receive personalized speech technology, and then raised $1500 to purchase this software for a young man in Lethbridge. Next, she wants to work to further reduce gender and social inequalities in her community and throughout the world and is eager to continue her education in International Relations or Political Science the following year. She is very excited to be a part of the Hub and for this next year of action centered around the Sustainable Development Goals!
