The Sustainable Development Goals Hub
Tori Gilkes (they/them) is an aspiring public servant hoping to obtain a degree in political science. Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, they hope to tackle the social and financial inequalities present in the province. Tori is passionate about helping everyone achieve an equally good quality of life, while consuming resources responsibly and being respectful of the environment. They’re already working towards the SDGs by volunteering with the Calgar- based Street Sisters to improve life for the homeless. Tori is looking forward to having educational resources available through the SDG Hub and information necessary to enact meaningful change. The quote that has influenced them to help others in need is the following:
“When we gonna see that life is happening?
And that every single body bleeding on its knees is an abomination
And every natural being is making communication
And we’re just sparks, tiny parts of a bigger constellation
We’re miniscule molecules that make up one body
You see the tragedy and pain of a person that you’ve never met
Is present in your nightmares, in your pull towards despair
And the sickness of the culture, and the sickness in our hearts
Is a sickness that’s inflicted by this distance that we share”
– Kate Tempest in “Tunnel Vision”
