The Alberta Council for International Cooperation (ACGC), a non-profit Edmonton based organization serving Alberta’s international and community development organizations, is accepting applications for the position of Executive Director.

Accountable to the Board of Directors, and guided by our organizational vision, mission, and strategic goals, the Executive Director will be responsible for providing strategic and operational oversight for the activities of the Board, including providing leadership and management towards strong human resources, finances, and program management; advancing stakeholder relations and advocacy; and supporting sound governance.

Key areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:

Leadership and Management: The Executive Director ensures ACGC upholds its values in all activities, maintains programmatic excellence, and evaluates programs for consistent quality. It includes recruiting, leading, and developing staff, as well as ensuring compliance with donor standards and relevant legislation. The Executive Director is responsible to manage day-to-day operations efficiently, oversee program offerings, and strengthen accountability and anti-racist practices, including addressing and preventing sexual misconduct.

Financial Management: The Executive Director demonstrates financial stewardship and secures new revenue streams, such as institutional donors and grants. Collaborating with the Board and internal finance staff, the role includes providing oversight for financial and risk management, budgeting, financial reporting, and internal controls. It also encompasses administering funds according to the approved budget and approving expenditures within delegated authority. Reporting on revenues, expenditures, and financial position to the Board, ensuring compliance with taxation legislation, and working with auditors for financial statements and filings are additional tasks to be undertaken.

Stakeholder Relations: The Executive Director establishes connections with stakeholders locally, regionally, and internationally to advance the mission and strategic direction of the organization. Open communication with stakeholders and funders is maintained to keep them informed about the organization’s work and identify changes in the communities it serves. Active participation and leadership in meetings and information exchange within the Inter-council Network and Cooperation Canada are important. The role also includes serving as the organization’s spokesperson, handling external communications, producing official correspondence for the Board, and representing the organization at community and industry events.

Governance: The Executive Director collaborates with the Board of Directors to develop and implement the strategic plan and strong governance practices. Supporting the Executive Committee in building a strong volunteer Board of Directors, serving as an ex-officio at meetings, and involving the Board in organizational needs are key aspects. Ensuring compliance with bylaws and organization policies, and providing guidance for policy and procedure updates are additional responsibilities. Supporting and participating in Board committees as required is also expected.

Advocacy: The Executive Director serves as a representative and advocate for the members of ACGC in various forums at the local, national, and international levels. The responsibility includes voicing the interests of the organization’s members and sector in promoting sustainable human development and engaging with government representatives and key decision-makers to advance these interests.
