Job Description:
Right to Learn Afghanistan is seeking a dynamic communications professional with strong media experience in a non-profit organization to elevate and lead Right to Learn’s media presence while also supporting organization-wide communications, public engagement, and advocacy efforts.
As a recognized leader in the fight for the rights of women and girls, this role will enhance the reach of Right to Learn Afghanistan and assist in amplifying the voices of Afghan women and girls globally. The role has the potential to grow further with the organization as our needs in this area expand.
We are searching for a candidate with an excellent work ethic, who can work collaboratively across the organization, who is passionate about making the right to quality education a reality for girls and women in Afghanistan, and who will bring their energy and ideas into our organization.
Job Duties:
Media (Approx. 8 hours per week)
- Act as the primary media contact, handling press inquiries and cultivating media relationships.
- Develop, review, and distribute press releases to increase awareness and align with organizational goals.
- Manage media outreach, including interviews, and maintain a comprehensive media contacts list.
- Track media coverage relevant to Right to Learn’s mission and share insights with the team.
- Draft and maintain messaging guidelines, spokesperson guidebooks, and talking points.
- Provide media relations support and guidance to Right to Learn chapters and youth advocates nationwide.
Communications and Engagement (Approx. 24 hours per week)
- Collaborate with the Advocacy and Engagement team to create content for Right to Learn’s website, public materials, social media, blog, newsletters, and campaigns.
- Assist in supporting local outreach efforts of 10 volunteer-led chapters across Canada, providing tools and guidance for their activities and events.
- Conduct community outreach to build public support, respond to inquiries, and foster relationships with partners and stakeholders.
- Lead or assist with national events to expand Right to Learn’s visibility and impact.
- Participate in speaking engagements, representing Right to Learn in local and national forums.
- Attend virtual staff meetings, team meetings, and occasional face-to-face meetings.
Working Hours:
Part-time, 32 hours per week. This role combines remote work with occasional in-person attendance for selected events and the annual staff retreat.
Location:
Remote within Canada; must be available for periodic virtual meetings across time zones and occasional in person meetings.
Qualifications:
- At least 5 years of relevant work experience
- Minimum post-secondary diploma, Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Excellent writing, editing, and content creation skills with an understanding of different media formats
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to foster relationships with media and community partners.
- Demonstrated experience with media engagement in the Canadian context
- Familiarity with social media tools and social media strategy
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and coordinate a variety of activities concurrently
- Willingness to occasionally travel within Canada, as needed, and availability for occasional evening meetings
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
- Experience working on shared drives such as Google
Preferred/Helpful:
- Experience working with a multinational team both in person and remotely;
- Knowledge of Afghanistan and/or experience in developing countries
