Top 30 Under 30 Celebration
On February 7th, ACGC staff, board and members; as well community leaders joined an audience at The Top 30 Under 30 magazine launch event. Held at the University of Alberta, the launch celebrated the efforts of 30 youth who promote SDG 5: Gender Equality throughout the various avenues of their work in Canada and around the world The 30 Alberta youth selected come from a variety of backgrounds and sectors, and include nurses, doctors, social workers, engineers, students, and community development specialists. As part of the selection process, nominees were asked to reflect upon how they promote gender equality in their own work and daily lives, and to advise others on how they can take action towards gender equality.
At the Event, Top 30 Under 30’s Daryl Kootenay and Glenielia Ariel Crawler lifted spirits by sharing music and dance from their traditional indigenous culture. A formative element that shaped how they were both equipped with cultural values that prioritize the strength of whole communities that leave no-one behind. Acknowledgments were delivered by the Honorable Lorne Dach on behalf of the Premier, and Heather McPherson, ACGC Executive Director. Hoda Katebi attended the event as an honorary Top 30 Under 30, and engaged in discussion around the ways gender equality intersects with race. The inequalities present in society motivated Hoda to act, and informed the valuable perspective she had to she with the audience. A few of the youth who were selected to receive the award also spoke to their experiences and offered encouragement. Through the inspiring words of those working for gender equality, others present were invited to take the next steps needed to make the world a more equitable place for all.
